Making Debbie’s Day

April 12, 2008 by Tara Lacher

Yesterday was Friday and I decided that I was going to make someone’s day.  I was going to hand deliver a scarf to a woman that I read about in Celebrate North Dakota.  She was diagnosed with breast cancer.

I go to her place of work and ask for her.  The receptionist is unable to get a hold of anyone in her department so she asks if they could page her.  Within minutes I hear the page overhead and she calls the receptionist.  The receptionist informs her that there is a lady in the lobby waiting to see her and asked her if it would be possible to come up and see her.  She says "Yes."

Debbie comes around the corner and she looks like she did in the paper, except she’s far more beautiful in person!  I tell her that I’m the Pink Scarf Lady and that I have a special gift for her.  I proceed to share information with her about my project and ask her if she has time to open her gift.  She starts by opening the card.  She then unwraps a beautiful pink scarf and says "it’s so beautiful.  You’re amazing!  You do this for women with cancer?  I said "Yes, anyone that I hear about."  She said "You made my day.  In fact, you really made my day.  Thank you so much! "

On my way home I think about what it must be like to have a complete stranger come to your place of work, give you a gift, and have them tell you you’re special.  I know from experience it makes their day and it certainly makes mine.  I feel so good inside knowing that I touched another person’s life so positively.
